It’s a real thing
As confirmed in one of the most recent studies — the National Association of REALTORS®’ 2024 Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers. In it, NAR researchers discovered that 17 percent of all home buyers and sellers surveyed, who completed a transaction between July 2023 and June 2024, bought a multigenerational home.
That’s the highest percentage since 2012, when the NAR began tracking this home-buying category. Its annual Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers report has been in existence since 1981.
In the 2024 report, multigenerational home buyers cited four reasons for their purchase: cost savings (36 percent), caring for aging parents (25 percent), children over the age of 18 returning home (21 percent), and children over the age of 18 who haven’t launched (20 percent).
