If you’re searching for a new custom Florida home in the Daytona Beach area, you might not think the home of the “World’s Most Famous Beach” also is home to a thriving museum scene.
Informative museums of all sizes are sprinkled throughout this booming small metropolis, and residents of Mosaic — ICI Homes’ popular master-planned community for all ages in Daytona Beach — are perfectly positioned to join the fun.
Since ICI Homes is headquartered here, we’ve compiled a starter list. It’s only a sample, but each museum is only minutes east of Mosaic via International Speedway Boulevard (U.S. Highway 92).
Here’s a quick guide to Daytona Beach’s museum scene.
Cici and Hyatt Brown Museum of Art — located at 352 South Nova Road in Daytona Beach, near the Museum of Arts & Sciences noted below. The soaring, two-level Brown Museum features the world’s largest collection of Florida-themed art, acquired by local residents Cici and Hyatt Brown. The collection — 2,600 paintings strong — rotates throughout the permanent gallery while smaller galleries spotlight special exhibitions.
Halifax Historical Museum — located at 252 South Beach Street, in Daytona Beach’s historic district on the west bank of the Halifax River. Housed in a circa-1910 building that was once a Merchants Bank, the Halifax Historical Museum offers permanent exhibits focused on the history of the greater Daytona Beach area.
Museum of Arts & Sciences — located at 352 South Nova Road in Daytona Beach, on the same grounds as the Brown Museum noted above. Popularly known as MOAS, the Museum of Arts & Sciences is packed with exhibitions and activities, including a planetarium, children’s museum, innovative visible-storage exhibits of priceless artifacts, a 90-acre nature preserve, Cuban, African and decorative arts exhibits, and much more. The Root Family Museum showcases Florida’s largest collection of Coca-Cola memorabilia, and a Florida Giant Ground Sloth skeleton greets visitors to the Prehistory of Florida gallery.
Southeast Museum of Photography — located at 1200 W. International Speedway Boulevard on the Daytona State College campus. It’s part of the educational process at Daytona State — students often photograph and/or curate exhibitions as part of their curriculum — but the Museum of Photography’s galleries and research also are open for public learning and enjoyment. Photographs and photographers range from the greats to the up-and-coming, and exhibits run the gamut from historical photography to future techniques and topics.
Mosaic Plus program — if you’re keen on a new custom Florida home at Mosaic, or are a new resident, definitely contact the community’s full-time lifestyle director for information on the Mosaic Plus program.
It’s a partnership with Daytona Beach area retailers, service providers and restaurants that provides perks and discounts for Mosaic residents. Perhaps some of the area’s museums already are included as part of the Mosaic Plus program, or might be added in the future.
The Mosaic Movement program, which organizes volunteer projects for Mosaic residents, also might feature museum-oriented activities now and in the future.
